The ReDICo team at the University of Potsdam is pleased to announce the block course (Blockseminar) “English as a Lingua Franca: origins, developments, and practices” by Prof. Sávio Siqueira, from the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil). The course will take place on-site and is one out of a series of activities organized by ReDICo Uni Potsdam (UP) on the topic of “digital interculturality” in the winter term 2023/24. Participants will gain insights into the topic of ELF teaching, postcolonial studies, and intercultural education from a Global South perspective.

Sávio Siqueira is Associate Professor of English at the Department of Germanic Languages at the Federal University of Bahia (Salvador, Brazil) and productivity scholarship recipient from Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). His main research interests are cultural studies, language education, post-colonial English language studies, the global expansion of ELF, and its effects on the political and educational landscape in Brazil.

Course description:
The course will provide an overview of ELF as a phenomenon and field of inquiry, emphasizing its origins, developments, and practical implications. ELF will be presented against the backdrop of areas that have contributed to its expansion and consolidation, such as critical language pedagogy, intercultural education, and decolonial studies. The social, political, and ideological debates around ELF in contemporary multilingual/multicultural spaces will also be addressed.
